Fungal nail infections

What are fungal nails?

A fungal nail infection is a common condition causing nails to become thick, discoloured and brittle.

What causes fungal nails?

Fungal nail infections develop when a fungus enters through skin abrasions or damaged nails.

Contributing factors include:

  • Warm, moist environments
  • Poor circulation
  • Constrictive footwear
  • Increased perspiration
  • Walking barefoot in areas such as swimming pools and gyms where the infection is likely to be spread.

How are fungal nails treated?

Treatment options are based on an individual and are dependent on the severity of the infection along with other factors. Treatment can take up to 18 months for the infection to fully clear, due to the length of time it can take for an entire toenail to grow. There is no guaranteed treatment method, and infection often reoccurs.

Trimming the nail and reducing the thickness with a file or a nail drill can help relieve  discomfort, aid penetration of topical treatments and reduce the risk of further trauma occurring.

Treatment options include:

Topical anti-fungal medicaments:

These can be applied at home until the infection has fully cleared.

Regular appointments may be required to trim and reduce thickness of the affected nails to maintain foot health and optimise treatment
